That’s the attitude you need to have. I’ll admit I’m not queen of this. People don’t want to be misconstrued as being cocky or arrogant so sometimes we downplay our success. That might be appropriate sometimes. But when you do it to the point that you start to underestimate your own abilities it really is a problem.

Look at it this way, if you needed to hire a mechanic and dude was like, “Yeah. So like, I think I can fix your car. I mean I went to basically the Harvard of mechanic schools so like I think I can do it. I’m no Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor but I got you.” If he doesn’t believe in his own ability to fix your car you definitely aren’t going to! You won’t be like, “Well young man, here’s my Bugatti Veyron[1]. Why don’t you go ahead and pop the hood and see what you can do with that.” Nope!

I see people out there marketing a product be it a mixtape or a blog (because everybody raps or blogs now) and they are kind of iffy about it. “Check out my mixtape. It’s my first one so don’t go expecting Wayne. And don’t judge the album cover cause I’m no photoshop expert. I made that joint in MS Paint.” So what if you don’t know how to make your mic levels sound professional or if you don’t have professional grade album covers. That’s why you’re unsigned. People expect that. Don’t focus on your negative attributes.

Take my mom. [Not literally. I'm pretty fond of her so I'll keep her.] Ha. Anyway. Take my mom for example. She’s the world’s most amazing cook. If you say otherwise you are being ridiculous! And sometimes she’ll say “Sorry if the creme brulee’s too sweet.” or “I may have put too much parmesan in the Fettuccine Alfredo” First of all, the fact that she’s making these dishes gives her ten thousand cool points and excuses anything. Second, nobody ever notices these things because they are in her mind. (Love you mom)

The point is, no, don’t be cocky and arrogant like “Yo you lucky to even be in my presence right now.” But you gotta have that “You’re Gonna Love Me” attitude. Where you have the appropriate amount of confidence. You know what you’re selling is hot. You know you have the skill and the vision. So go after it.
