Huxtable Life Lesson #3: Go All The Way
by MichelleHuxtable
Cliff and Olivia are about to get some cake! Let’s see what happens…
Bill Cosby Heathcliff Huxtable is the man! He knew what he wanted and he got it. He wanted his slice of cake. He cut his piece. He got an accomplice involved. He sat down to have that slice of cake and oh no! It appears he gets caught. But you know what he does when Claire asks, “Where did this cake come from?” He and his accomplice, little Olivia, start looking around like they have no sense! It’s brilliant.
A lesser man would have fessed up or blamed the child. Cliff went all the way with his lie. He wasn’t going to break down and explain. He started out on a road and he was going to continue down it.
I’m not encouraging the thievery of baked goods or anything. Nor do I condone lying to wives and moms. My mom would fix me a new one if I snuck a slice of her world famous sweet potato pie. (Seriously though, I have friends who only make contact around Thanksgiving to get a piece of that pie.)
The lesson we can learn from Cliff is that whatever you do -- do it all the way. A lot of times we have a goal that we truly want to reach but we don’t go all the way out of fear or whatever. I knew a girl who wanted to be a singer but wouldn’t try out for a small contest. When I first started blogging I updated daily but nobody knew about it. I didn’t tell friends or family. I didn’t contact bloggers. I wanted to have a successful blog but I didn’t go all the way.
I knew a guy back in high school who wanted to play pro ball but wasn’t on the school basketball team. Sometimes we expect a huge reward now. We see that our product, be it our basketball skills, singing ability, or unrivaled blogging capabilities, is amazing and deserves the top honor. But instead of taking the necessary steps to get there like trying out for the team, getting a vocal coach, or telling some friends about your new project, we just sit back and expect success to come to us.
What we need to do is cut into that cake and take what we want. I don’t know the extended metaphor I was going to use to describe the putting a paper towel in it’s place and covering it with chocolate icing. Maybe don’t burn your bridges? Cliff made the cake look untouched. It looked the way Claire left it.
Leave your starting place how you found it. Don’t say “I’m busting out of here and never looking back!” Remember who helped you when you first started. The coach who told you your left side was weak and to guard your dribble. The person who told you to have better posture to reach that higher note. The blogger who gave you tips and tricks on how to build a successful blog.
That way when people ask “Where did this cake (skill) come from?” You won’t have to act sketchy like Cliff and Olivia. You can tell them how you did what you did and help them along the way. Huxtable Life Lesson #3: Go All The Way.
