So I was pleasantly surprised with the movie 2012. I definitely did not want to see it. It was my first night back in the DMV and I had to go see a depressing movie with completely unsubstantiated facts? Well boy, oh boy was I wrong. If you liked Day After Tomorrow then you’ll enjoy this movie. Spoiler Alert: Clocking in at 158 minutes, a little over 2 and half hours, it’s a freaking long movie.
For my film experts, the CGI was pretty legit. There were times when it really looked legitimate. I think the way the used local landmarks made it more serious. They showed the Washington Monument crumbling because of an earthquake and other landmarks like that.
For my science nerds, geology geeks, and other freaks, the scientific aspect of this movie was great. I truly enjoyed it. Shout out to my fellow science enthusiasts. I didn’t know what to expect from 2012. From what I know about the whole “world’s gonna end in 2012″ thing it’s based on the Mayan calender. So I expected some Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto type stuff. But no instead it was much more Day After Tomorrow-ish. Essentially solar flares heated the Earth’s core and it’s bubblin’ which causes all kinds of mayhem. Plate tectonics are heavily discussed as are hot spots. I had to laugh out loud when at one point in order to escape the San Andreas Fault shifting, their brilliant plan was to go to Hawaii. Hawaii. Also, they outran pyroclastic flow. On foot. Mind you it moves at like 450 mph. But you gotta suspend some disbelief to enjoy a movie.

My favorite part of the movie is in the last 5-10 minutes. So a few people survive by making arks (Yes like Noah) to survive the tsunamis caused by the earthquakes. Guess where they make land? AFRICA!!!! How awesome is it that they have to start all mankind over again in Africa? Beyond awesome. After 2.5 hours of movie watching, the last 5 minutes made it totally worth it.

I felt like the ending credits deserved a really just ridiculously rock and roll song like some Armageddon music but it was some somber tone. That’s not really important but you know ending credits can be pretty important to some people.[1]
To summarize, it really is a great movie. It’s not nearly as depressing as I thought it would be. Go see it![2] Oh and also I have an unrelated soft spot in my heart for John Cusack because of this line from the movie Must Love Dogs, “Charlie, you should have seen this girl. She’s shy, she’s fragile, she’s self-conscious. She has no idea how beautiful she is. She’s a mess. It’s fantastic.” Don’t ask why, but I love this guy.
